Alex Borinsky

BA, Yale University, Humanities

Alex has worked with students as young as 2 and as mature as 70. At Forum, Alex has enjoyed working especially with middle- and high-schoolers.

With Alex, students learn to approach writing as a way of thinking, and to expand their sense of how they might think and what they might be able to say. By becoming empowered writers--and thinkers--students can begin to read books as the result of a creative process not unlike their own. The result isn’t just an A or a stronger writing voice, but a toolset for understanding.

After graduating from Yale as a Humanities major in 2008, Alex served as the co-founder and Education Director of Edgewood Arts / DEEP Center, where she designed and led creative writing classes at middle schools. Since then, she's taught and tutored students in English, writing, history, philosophy, and general study skills.

Alex grew up in Baltimore and studied literature, early American history, and religious thought in college. She approaches theater as an experiment in how to live together. She recently completed a playwriting MFA at Brooklyn College, where she studied everything from Strindberg to Sontag. She’s working on play commissions from Playwrights Horizons, Clubbed Thumb, and Rady&Bloom Collective Playmaking, and is artist-in-residence at University Settlement, where she’s developing a piece called Weird Classrooms, about experimental education models.

As an actor, Alex has performed in places like BAM, PS122 and 3LD, and in a handful of otherwise obscure dives, bedrooms, backyards, and parks. Her writing has appeared in n+1, Rusted Radishes (Lebanon), and HowlRound. A history play, Brief Chronicle, Books 6-8, will be published this spring by 3 Hole Press.
