David’s mathematical journey took him from Wesleyan, where he earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics, to UC Berkeley, where he completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics. This deep theoretical grounding shapes everything about his teaching: he approaches mathematics not as a collection of techniques to master, but as a coherent discipline with its own underlying truth and beauty.
For over twenty six years, David has taught at the Dalton School, where his influence extends across the mathematics program. He founded the Dalton Math Seminar—a class where students tackle challenging problems and explore advanced topics in a collaborative atmosphere—and created the geometry and precalculus 2A sequences that have become known throughout the city for their inventiveness, elegance, and rigor. Beyond Dalton, David has taught at premier enrichment communities including the New York Math Circle, and has lectured internationally, including presenting to students at the Second High School Attached to Beijing Normal University.
What makes David exceptional in one-on-one settings is his Socratic method and calm brilliance. Whether guiding a student through abstract proofs or building foundational arithmetic skills, he cultivates genuine mathematical thinking rather than rote memorization. His years of classroom teaching have given him an extraordinary ability to shepherd students through every level of high school mathematics, identifying precisely where understanding breaks down and building it back up with patience and precision. For students hungry for more than their school curriculum offers, David provides mathematical enrichment that opens doors to competition mathematics, college-level topics, and the pure joy of mathematical discovery.
